Mission
BYU Broadcasting (BYUB) is home to Brigham Young University’s educational broadcast channels. This includes BYUtv, BYU Television International, KBYU Eleven, BYU Radio, Classical 89 KBYU-FM, and Create TV. Additionally, households worldwide are able to access much of BYUB’s programming via cable, satellite, and the Internet.
BYU Broadcasting's first station launched in 1946 as KBYU-AM 660, which at the time broadcast only to select areas of campus. BYU professor T. Earl Pardoe first proposed the idea of a campus radio station to then student Owen S. Rich, who had previously worked as a radio and radar technician for the Coast Guard during World War II. Working with Provo city, Rich was able to begin transmitting the signal of the station citywide via the city's power-line grid in 1948. KBYU-FM followed just over a decade later in November 1960, with KBYU-TV, a public television channel, launching under the direction of Professor Norman C. Tarbox in November 1965. Today, BYU Broadcasting's channels are available to over 50 million homes in the United States and millions more internationally, including English, Spanish, and Portuguese channels of BYU Television International.
BYU Broadcasting is a service of Brigham Young University, one of the largest private universities in the world, and is based on the main campus of the university in Provo, Utah. As a service of Brigham Young University, BYU Broadcasting accesses a rich and talented student base in every aspect of its operations and strives to involve and mentor students from disciplines across the campus.
BYU Broadcasting aims to inform and enrich audiences by acquiring, creating, and distributing programs that reflect the values of Brigham Young University and its sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the shared values of good people of all backgrounds and faiths.
The activities and educational resources of Brigham Young University serve as the primary source of content for television and radio productions; however, BYUB also partners with independent producers from around the world to create and distribute values-based programming to appeal to its ever-expanding audiences. Ultimately, each program supported by BYU Broadcasting seeks to enrich lives by touching the minds, hearts, and souls of all its viewers and listeners worldwide.
